JA Teaches 4,000 Diocesan Students in One Week!

During the week of January 30th, Junior Achievement and sixteen Catholic schools partnered to teach elementary and middle school students lessons about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy.

Schools such as St. Benedict the Moor, St. Margaret of Scotland, and St. Bernadette have a “whole school” program, meaning the entire student body receives JA programs for the entirety of the day. JA estimates that nearly 4,000 students in 193 classes participated in the “real world” preparation programs during this week.

Business professionals from Tri-State Capital Bank, high school students from Serra Catholic, Bishop Canevin, and Seton-LaSalle, as well as Duquesne university students, and other local professionals, shared their real-world experiences with the students to help them learn what it takes to become successful adults. Junior Achievement is proud to partner with the Diocese of Pittsburgh to bring these programs to our future work force.

Steelers Ryan Mundy Tells JA Kids "Preparation Leads to Opportunities"

High schools students were treated to a special surprise last week at BNY Mellon. Ryan Mundy of the Pittsburgh Steelers visited the downtown office to support Junior Achievement's National Groundhog Job Shadow Day.

Mundy spoke to the students not only about his life and football career, but also the importance of focusing on school to better prepare for future opportunities. Mundy's relevant message complements JA's Job Shadow mission to help students make the connection between what they learn in school and how it applies to the workplace and their future careers.

$100,000 Walmart grant Alleviates & Prevents High School Drop Out Rates in PA

Walmart generously awarded a $100,000 grant to JA chapters across the state of Pennsylvania.

Approximately 34,300 Pennsylvania students from the Class of 2010 dropped out, according to a March 2011 study by the Alliance for Excellent Education. The JA Graduation Pathways program, supported by the $100,000 Walmart grant, aims to reach 25,000 students at risk of dropping out of high school across Pennsylvania.

“Junior Achievement’s programs give promise to our young people, their families and our communities as a whole,” said Nick Bertram, Walmart Regional General Manager for Pennsylvania. ”Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are committed to helping people live better, healthier lives---and there is no better way to do that than by providing direct support to organizations, like Junior Achievement, that are working so hard to improve their communities.”
